Steam (and only Steam) completely freezes up my Windows 7 PC (except in Safe Mode) No BSOD just total irreparable lock-up.

My system:
MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz, 12.0GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce GTX 260

I have tried:
Re-installing Steam, Uninstalling any Creative software, tested and re-tested my RAM, Re-installing DirectX, Running a registry cleaner, Uninstalling AVG. System Restore to before I installed Mafia.

It all started the morning after I installed MAFIA. Now if I run ANY game that uses Steam, my computer locks up and can only be fixed with a hard re-boot. I had to disable the auto-run or I can't use Windows.

Steam and all steam affiliated games do this, and I haven't gotten any other software to do it. I've run Crysis on full (not through Steam) and no problems at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I noticed you did not mention installing new video card drivers. Bad drivers would fit your symptoms. Especially if it works in safe mode. Might want to try disabling certain services or programs from loading (easiest way is through msconfig). Google the service or program name if you are not sure about it. Look at the non-microsoft services first.

It was the audio drivers.

I isolated services down to the Windows Audio service.

I uninstalled my Realtek HD Audio drivers and all fixed.

Thanks.
